Mr. Mark Hodges is back in the Crusader lab and ready to bring Science and S.T.E.A.M to life!
Mr. Hodges has taught in a variety of positions at St. Scholastica over the past 7 years. His strong background in science education comes in part from his Bachelor of Science from Illinois State University, where he earned his degree in Earth and Space Science Education with additional teaching endorsements in physics, middle school general science, and middle school physical science. He is also an alum of Lewis University where he earned his Master of Arts in Reading and Literacy, Reading Specialist.
Mr. Hodges’s passion for education goes beyond the science classroom in that he is a lifelong learner. Over the past summer he took classes in ceramics, reading education, and materials science. In past years, he has participated in many, many other experiences. A few of his favorites include: FermiLab National Laboratory studying particle physics, the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Service studying the atmosphere and weather, and The University of Chicago studying neuron brain mapping.
He is a member of many professional organizations including: the National Science Teaching Association, the American Meteorological Society, the Illinois Reading Council, and the Illinois Junior Academy of Science. In the classroom, Mr. Hodges has been awarded multiple grants including: the Trout in the Classroom Grant from the Trout Unlimited Oak Brook Chapter, the Whole Kids Foundation School Garden Grant, and the Scholastic Inspire Art in the Classroom Grant. Fun fact: Mr. Hodges, is an Eagle Scout from Troop 512 who meets at St. Scholastica, you can find his name on the Eagle Scout Plaque when you enter the school.
This school year, Mr. Hodges is excited to continue to grow the S.T.E.A.M. program. He is super excited to continue the partnerships with the Civil Air Patrol, Adopt a Cow program, and the Trout in the classroom program! As well as, putting his Reading Specialist, Reading and Literacy Masters Degree to use, serving as our school’s Reading Specialist.
Mr. Ken Scheel
Mr. Ken Scheel is a retired Physical Education teacher and proud Army veteran whose dedication and service extend far beyond the classroom. Since his wife, Mrs. Scheel, began teaching at St. Scholastica School, Mr. Scheel has been a consistent and reliable presence in the STS halls, generously volunteering his time and talents to support student learning and growth.
In addition to his classroom support, Mr. Scheel plays a vital role in enriching our school environment. He is a Staff Sponsor of both the Beautification Club and the Gardening Club, where his leadership and hard work help our students maintain and improve the natural beauty of our campus.
Beyond his volunteer work, Mr. Scheel serves as a regular substitute teacher, stepping in wherever needed with professionalism, patience, and care. His wealth of experience as an educator, combined with his steady presence and dedication to our mission, make him a trusted and valued member of our school community.
Mr. Scheel’s service to our students and staff embodies the spirit of generosity and dedication that defines St. Scholastica School. We are blessed to count him as an integral part of our team.
